How Barbados Got Its Name - although the English were the first to settle on the island, it was originally found by the Portuguese, who, upon seeing the Bearded Fig Tree named the island "Los Barbados", meaning "The Bearded Ones". The English later dropped the "Los", calling the island simply Barbados.
